Mistress Dyvia presents:
Cost of a Hero 3
By Mistress Dyvia

“Some things I remember like they were yesterday.  It was twelve years ago…   I felt the pain, the pressure.  Painkillers didn’t really work on me, and it was so hard listening to those around me.  I heard the beeps, and sounds around me.  I was terrified, I had no idea, my instincts weren’t exactly up to snuff.  I mean I wasn’t exactly born into that position, I just had to listen and take it one step at a time, a life was at stake and if I didn’t do it correctly, I might be responsible for a death.”

Taking a deep breath, I continued.  “The pain was excruciating.  I screamed.  And then I was told to push…  and I tried…  I wasn’t sure if I was doing it right.  I was afraid if I pushed too hard that the others in the room could be killed by the force.  But I guess my lack of confidence is what saved me there.  Everything went without a hitch, and then I saw you.  My beautiful little daughter.”

Chrissy looked back at me, “Okay Mom, but that doesn’t explain to me how when Billy tried to grab my chest I broke his arm and now I’m suspended.”

I let out a sigh, “Honestly, I didn’t think you’d show signs of powers like that.  But I’m getting to that.”  I pulled the car over and slowly moved into the garage, and I parked, “It's easier if I explained when we get home.”  Chrissy crossed her arms over her shoulders.

I stepped inside the main reception of the condo association, I waved at the manager, “Hi Pete!”

He waved back, “Hi Tammy, Hi Chrissy!”

Chrissy just waved her back but kept her arms crossed and her head down.

A moment later we entered the room and I sent off a text message.  Chrissy went to her room, I had a small half glass of wine, cuz I was going to need this to explain everything to her.  I knocked on her door and stepped inside, she had posters of Mary Sue and Stoic plastered on her wall.

“Come with me.”

She followed behind me, “Mom, do you or… Did my father have powers?”

I stopped and looked back at her, “I do.”  I said, my voice quietly, “But I honestly don’t know about your father.”  I didn’t even know who her father was.

“I won’t go there.”  she said.  I smiled, I’ve never had the strength to tell her about the night she was conceived, someday I might.  Maybe today?

I stopped by the linen closet, and opened the door, and then I pressed my hand to the side mirror, and the floor spread open to reveal steps.  I lead her down.  And stopped when she looked at my costume.  Chrissy’s eyes went wide.  “Mom… You...you’re…”

I nodded my head, “Yeah.  I wasn’t always just a Mom…  I wasn’t always just woman. I was born Malcolm.  My father was a politician, and I was kidnapped, a fellow prisoner had the ability to give people powers by sleeping with them, and they changed genders…  I became Mallory, and you knew me as Mary Sue…”

“Why did you go into hiding?  Everyone knew who you were…  How did I not see it?”

I shrugged.  “It doesn't matter, a little makeup, change of hair coloring, and people see what they expect.  I was captured by Lady MindStorm, She had a goon spray something in my face, and I was unconscious.  I missed 72 hours, and my next memory was waking up when Stoic woke me up after rescuing me.  In the weeks that followed, I found I was pregnant.  I decided to keep the baby, hell, I didn’t even if I didn’t know if some creep used my unconscious body, or if they used some Invitro method.”

Chrissy looked at me, “How did they catch you?”

“It doesn't matter, I was looking for my friend Victoria who had been kidnapped.”

“Victoria?  Like my middle name?”

I nodded my head, “Yeah, and Crystal for my friend Krystal- with a K- who is still a prisoner nearly fifteen years later.”  I paused, “And also Stoic’s daughter.”

“Did you find Victoria?”

I shook my head, “No. Just gone..”  I felt a tear run down my cheek and wiped at it.  “And my parents were killed when I was in labor…  so I thought it best to just disappear, as did my other siblings, I haven’t seen any of them since about a week after you were born.”  I shrugged, “I tried to stay normal for the most part, but every so often, I appear as Mary Sue to remind the bad guys that I’m still here.” I tried to force a smile.

“Which brings us to me and Billy?”

“Yeah, my powers are based on confidence, if I believe I can kick someone’s ass, I can.” this time my enthusiasm picking up.

“So that means if I think I can hurt Billy… assuming my powers are like yours, “I can probably hurt him a lot.”

“And now you need to learn some self control so that you don’t.” I heard a voice from behind us.  I turned around and saw Stoic standing behind me.

I smiled widely, and held my arms open wide, and we hugged.  “I see you got my message, I haven’t seen you in too long.”

“Is this really Chrissy?” he asked looking down at her.

Chrissy smiled, “Yup, it's me.”

I looked at Stoic and asked, “Should we train her?”

He nodded his head, “at least a little, so she won’t hurt anybody by accident.”

Chrissy chimed in, “Or a lot, so you know, I could be a sidekick for one of you.”

I looked at her, “I don’t think so.”

A few weeks later.

Chrissy’s Powers were definitely like mine, not to the same level by any chance, but at twelve she could run as fast as any Olympian, and lift five times her own weight.  I wondered what she would be like by the time she was in her twenties?  Would she be as powerful as I was, or more powerful?  Or would the paternal DNA dilute her powers and she would always be half as powerful as me.

I watched with amusement as she gave everything she had at Stoic.  Even with all her excitement and all her confidence, she still couldn’t break through his defenses.  We were pretty sure she would grow into her powers, but it would take a year… or maybe even 10 to the point where she would be my age by the time her powers were at full swing.

“Okay you two.  Time for food.” I said interrupting their session.

“But Mom…” Chrissy started to whine as Stoic broke off his assault… and her own voice cut itself off, “-ooohh!  Grilled cheese!”

She leaped thirty feet over to me without so much as a running start, and grabbed a half sandwich…  “I’m glad some things other than combat can keep you motivated.”

“Mmm.. Good!”  she said between bites.

“Don’t talk with your mouth full… or at least cover your mouth…”  I said.

She put her fingers about an inch in front of her mouth and repeated, “Mmm.  Good.”

Stoic laughed as he slowly strode up to us, “Have a bottle of water, by any chance?”  not asking for food out of politeness, I assumed.

“Yeah,”  I said with a smile, “I have a cart on the other side of the door.”

“Thanks Tammy.”  he said, making me smile more that he was using my chosen name over my old name.  And a moment later I heard a “Woot!”

Chrissy looked at me, “What was that about?”

I giggled, “There was a steak and bacon pizza on the tray with his water and a note saying that I didn’t forget him...”

“Sounds… chunky.”

“Shaved steak.”

“Oh…  still sounds too meaty.”

I giggled again, “Well, it's his favorite pizza, and you’re a girl who eats healthy… more or less.”  As I eyed her grilled cheese, “Boys in his youth were encouraged to eat greasier foods.

He stepped back inside with a paper plate with a slice on it, he looked at Chrissy, “What are the three most important rules of being a hero?”

She stopped chewing and put her hand over her mouth, “One, Protect the innocent.  Two, Never Kill.  Three, Protect your identity.”

“Good…  So you can learn.” he said with a wink, “Give me a few minutes Chrissy and we can get back to training.”

I looked down at my daughter, “did you finish your homework for the weekend yet?”

She looked down, “I can finish it later.  Besides I have the whole day tomorrow.”

I scowled a bit at her, “Go get me your assignment list, I’ll be the judge of that.”  A few minutes later she came in, and I looked down at the list she printed from her teacher’s email…  “What have you done so far?”

She put her head down, “None…”

I let out a sigh, “Well, I guess that’s it for training for today.”

“But Mom!”  she begged me.

I put up a finger, “No ‘but Mom’s’ about it young lady, no more training until you get your homework done.”

“Tammy…” Stoic interceded, “What about.”

I gave him a glare,  “I said…”

“Hear me out…”  and then he leaned in and whispered into my ear.  I smiled.

“Okay…  mixing.. I like it…”  and then I turned to Chrissy, “So when you use your superspeed, do things tend to slow down around you?”  I know you’re not nearly as fast as I am, but I assume you perceive time differently?”

She nodded her head.  “Yeah.”

“Alright…  So if you want to train with Uncle Sto again before you leave… Use that superspeed to see if you can get your math and english done….. And be careful not to set your paper on fire with your pen…  Friction and superspeed don’t mix.”

Her eyes lit up, “I never even thought of that…” And she ran out of the room.

I looked at Stoic, “I think she was running at close to one hundred miles per hour.”

“I think it was closer to one hundred and sixty kilometers per hour.”

“We’re not in Canada.”  I told him with a smirk.

“More of the world uses the metric system.”

“But we’re in the stubborn country.” I corrected him.

He chuckled, “Uncle Sto?”

I blushed, “Well, she’s not your daughter, and I don’t date…  And in the last week you’ve treated her more like a daughter than any man I know… Is that an issue?”

He shook his head, “No.  it's been awhile since I had a family…”  his voice trailed off… and I know he was thinking of his daughter, Krystal… The woman who made me the woman I am… The only evidence that she was even still alive was that Lady Mindstorm still had new underlings appear.

“We’ve been a team for a while..  I started, “I’ve been your sidekick for years… You are family, and you have been.”

He looked me in the eye, “You have not been my sidekick in a very long time.  You are just as skilled as I am, your judgement is impeccable, you are stronger than I am, and I trust you with my life.  You are my partner.” and he put his right hand on my right shoulder.  “I mean that.”

I put my hand on his, “I don’t know about that, it means a lot.  But I’m not out there as much as you are any more… I’m a part-timer in the Superhero world, Being a full-time Mom takes away from that…”

“Bullshit.”  he said with a smile.  “If I needed you, you came.  Every. Single. Time.”

We chatted for a few more minutes when Chrissy came back in.  I held out my hand and she handed me her math homework.  The answers were all correct.  “Not bad…  But the last three answers.. It looks like you started to burn the page.  I’ll let you keep training if you promise to rewrite this, and get your history homework done… tonight before ten.”

She scowled, “I promise.”

A Few Weeks Later.

“Hello, Anders, Bailey, and Caulkson, how may I direct your call?”  I answered.  Listened and put them on hold and sent them to the correct associate.

The television was on, and suddenly cut to a “We interrupt this programming to bring you an important announcement.”  There was an attack on the town hall.. Like.. My city’s town hall… As in less than a half mile from Chrissy’s High School.

I stood up and my phone started buzzing with the Red Alert for a terrorist action in my area, I’ve gotten so many amber alerts since we moved here for missing children and such, but I’ve never had a red alert…  I needed to suit up.

Mr. Anders stepped out of his office, “We’re in lock down, we need to go to the basement, we have a shelter.”

I looked at him, “My Daughter is near there, I have to go.”

He looked at me as if I had three heads…  A step up from looking at me as if I had two…  and he said, “You can’t.  You need to lockdown.”

I shook my head, “I’m sorry I can’t.”

I grabbed my purse and started power walking to the door, and my phone rang, caller ID: ‘Sto.’

I answered it with a “I’m already on my way.”

“See you there.”  and the phone went dead.

Seconds later Mary Sue landed in front of the town hall.  I started walking up the stairs and I heard a crash behind me.  I turned to see a small crater behind me and Stoic standing behind me.  “Got your back, partner.”

I gave the briefest smile for acknowledgement and we started walking up the stairs together, then we heard gunfire…  and a man exploded through the window skipping on the concrete like a rock skips across the water.  And then another and another.

I started running.  And there was a girl covered in black spandex with a red cape and ski-mask with goggles taking down these men with high powered rifles.  And I found myself staring in disbelief alongside Stoic as this mysterious girl…  who I was ninety percent positive was my daughter, took down the gunmen.  And as he finished the last one off, she turned and saw the two of us…

A disguised voice, “Mary Sue! Stoic!  I am so pleased to meet you.  I am-”

“-Grounded for two weeks.” I cut her off.

She looked at me, “I’m sorry I think you have me confused with-”

“Grounded for three weeks?  Or was that four?” I asked sarcasm and anger thick in my voice.

Her arms slumped and her bowed down, “No…” Her voice became a little more like my daughter’s,  “I’m grounded for two weeks…  I guess… worst hero name ever.”

The three of us quickly rounded up the gunmen, and waited for the police…  We took a few pictures for the press.  But did not answer questions to any reporters.

“When we get outside, we are walking to the crater, you hold on to me, and we’ll fly up. Understand?”

“Yeah, Mom…” she said knowing she was getting a lecture at home.  Despite the fact I was going to have to get her back to school and find a way to make it look like she was hiding so no one puts together that she and the new sidekick are one and the same.

Halfway down the stairs and there was an explosion.  Fire launched itself at us.  We scattered.  What the actal fuck?  I rolled to the ground and looked for Chrissy, who had dodged the attack and charged the pyro.  This wasn’t a weapon, this was a power.  She decked him, and the guy didn’t launch thirty feet into the air, he dropped like a sack of potatoes.  At least she was showing some self-control.

I heard a voice beside me, “Well. she has the strength of a hero, but what about the speed?”  I turned and saw a man in a familiar costume…  A uniform… One that Lady Mindstorm’s minions wore.  “She knew you would lure both of you out…  The mundanes, the guns, your city, she’s always known where you were, and what would entice you… but look at your daughter…”

No. No. No. No. No…  Not again…

He sped off at her at a speed no human eye could perceive, but I could.  And I chased right after him, shoulder-checking him through a car and into a brick building mere inches before he could grab my daughter.  His body was more durable to compensate for the speed, so that slamming thought a brick wall wouldn’t do any permanent damage to him.  I paused to verify that he was out of the fight, he was…  I turned to check on Chrissy…

No… no. no.

There was a man behind her with a rag over her face, and she was unconscious…

No. No. No…

Krystal.  Victoria.

Friends flashed through my mind, people I cared for and valued who I never saw again because of them.  And then the wormhole opened and sucked them both in, and they were gone.  I rushed over trying to get into it… but it was gone…

In fact, all the powered opponents were gone, even the unconscious speeder in the brick wall.

Stoic stood behind me, “Back to base fast, we need to see if we can find them…  time is critical, don’t fall apart now…

And the next twenty four hours were hell.  No clues, no signs. And then the message came.

It was from Chrissy’s social media, and it was asking to accept a call to me.  Stoic was right there beside me, and I pressed the green button, but it was a mask, Lady Mindstorm’s mask, specifically.  “Long time no see, Mary Sue…  or Mallory, or Tammy… whatever you want to call yourself these days.”

“Where is my daughter?” I demanded.

“Oh, I’m going to tell you…  in just a minute. But first, here’s a little game to play.  I know the two of you really wanted to see me, But I’m afraid only Mary Sue will be able to come.   As you know, one of my minions makes wormholes… well I had him open a wormhole, and now there is an asteroid with a diameter about the size of a football stadium to land square on top of your daughter’s school in twenty minutes… it is moving at about 12 miles per second, and to put that in perspective, an asteroid with the diameter of a school bus could wipe out most of a metropolitan area with that same speed.  So… I’m afraid Stoic will be tied up with that, and we’ll have a chance to talk woman to woman.”

“You can’t expect me to believe-”

“You can.  And here are the coordinates. You come to that location, and you’ll be taken to my lair.  Stoic can just go to the school and just go up…  You have ten minutes or I can’ be responsible for what horrific things your daughter does to innocent children her own age.  Well, maybe I can, but legally it will be your daughter who does them, not me.”  and with a bit of laughter, she hangs up.

Bitch.

“You can’t go.” Stoic firmly told me.

“I have to.”  I said shaking my head.

“No.”  He said calmly, “I tracked the signal, I know where they are, you don’t have to meet her agent.  I will go directly and fight her.  You have to take out the asteroid.”

“No… I have to.” I fought.  I needed to save my daughter.

“Look, she wants you there.  Last time you faced her, you didn’t even see what she was capable of doing.  We don’t know how resistant you are to her powers.

“I’m pretty confident I can stop her to save Chrissy.”

“Regardless.  My powers make me immune to her control.  And your powers make you more likely to stop that asteroid and save the city… and I wouldn’t be surprised if it were everyone in a two hundred mile radius from having a really bad day… You know I’m right.”

“It doesn't matter, She’s my-”

“Do you trust me?” he asked…

I paused, I nodded my head… “Then Put your trust in me.”  and he held his hand out to me…

Minutes later…

I arrived at my daughter’s school. I stood in the quad with students looking at me and taking pictures with their phones, I looked up and stared trying to find the asteroid through the blue sky…  I knew it wouldn’t be straight up, there was a movement to the Earth, and that meant the asteroid would be a little to the right of where I was looking….  This would have been so much easier at night… maybe.  And... there it was.

‘What do you know,’ I thought…  ‘I actually could have flown straight up to intercept it.’

And I launched up into the sky pushing fast hitting speeds that I probably shouldn’t.  I felt the atmosphere heating up around my friction…  Until there was no atmosphere, and I saw the irregular shaped asteroid tumbling through space right at me.

I actually was questioning if Stoic actually could have stopped this…  too much pressure on a single part of this asteroid would make it break up and rain destruction down upon several cities across the hemisphere… But Moving quickly enough I could create a quantum speed and appear to have several of me push against it once to slow it down…  And that’s exactly what I did… moving so fast I was rapidly pressing against several dozen parts of the asteroid's surface at once… and it was slowing down….  Then it was stopping…  and now it was moving away from the earth.

This took a long time…  This wasn't ten minutes…  This was nearly an hour…  Once I was sure it was out of the path of the Earth, I started rushing back, and as I arrived into the atmosphere, the satellites must have caught up with my phone…  twenty missed messages from Stoic…

I called back, the earpiece in my ear echoing the sound of a ring tone, “Mom!?” Chrissy’s voice answered

“Are you alright, Sweetie?” My voice was a little more desperate than I intended.

“Yeah, we’re in a hospital in Boston…  Stoic is not…  He’s hurt pretty bad.”

“Hold on hun, I’m already locked onto your signal, I’ll be there in a minute…

I was in the lobby in seconds, and she was there. I squeezed her as tightly as I dared, and she did the same… “Are you alright?”

She nodded her head, “She made a new minion with some ridiculous powers.”

“She did?”  I asked in confusion about Lady Mindstorm having those powers...

“Well I assume she made Krystal create the powers…  but she was far stronger than him, but in a last moment of courage, he unleashed a bright power, everyone near him seemed super disoriented, and rushed me and took me and broke me out…  And we escaped.  They’re working on him in the OR.

I held her close, and we went up to the floor he was being worked on…  And after nearly an hour a man in green scrubs approached us… and then looked at me, “We can’t do anything for him… He’s in and out,  but he’s asking to speak with you…”

I felt my face grow pale, and I nodded my head and squeezed Chrissy’s hand before letting go and walking through the doors.  I saw him lying there unconscious.  The world’s greatest hero had been beaten for the first time…  And even I could tell that in a few mere moments, it would be ‘to death.’  I supressed my own sob as I sat next to him and took his hand in mine…

It took a moment and he coughed, blood splattering on his uniform.  And I knew why the doctor’s could do nothing, he was mostly invincible, they couldn’t even sew a laceration on him…  Internal bleeding, and there was no way to get past his skin.

His eyes met mine.  “Hey…”  I told him… “You saved my daughter.

He smiled and coughed again… “...Did…” he acknowledged

“I’m so sorry I wasn’t there with you.”  I said, another sob escaping my lips… I wanted to say sorry for the sob, but time was so little…

“You were…”  He said, squeezing my hand.”ts’okay…”  he gasped for a couple breaths of air.

“Krys…” He tried to say.

“You saved Chrissy…  Thank You…”

He tilted his head to the side as if too weak to shake his head, “Saw… Kryst”

“Your daughter?”

He nodded slightly once.  And his eyes rolled back and fell unconscious…  the machines that they did hook up to him had a slow and fading heartbeat.  I sat beside him for twenty minutes before Chrissy stepped inside as well. She sat on the other side of him and held his hand.  She cried silently…

His eyes snapped open…  He looked at her…”Be.. Good.”

“Uncle Stu… Please.. I love you.” she pressed her cheek to the back of his hand…

His mouth formed the word ‘Love,’ but the only word that escaped his lips was ‘Too.”

He tilted his head to look at me.  So many thoughts in his eyes, and no strength to speak them…   I spoke instead, “I love you for everything you’ve done for me. For everything you’ve done for my daughter…  You’re the best family I have ever had-” and  he knew I came from a good family, “-I’m honored to have been trained and mentored by you... and that you let me be your sidekick.”

“Partner.”  he corrected...And seconds later… the strongest man in the world, didn’t even have enough strength to take another breath…

Til Next Month for Part 4.

Are you emotionally invested yet?  Krystal is alive.  It's been years, is Victoria still alive as well?  If Lady Mindstorm has known where they have been all along, what can Mallory/Tammy do to keep her daughter safe?

Let me know your thoughts.
