Excuse Me,
What Exactly did My Husband do?
part 2

by: Mistress Dyvia

"What?" the two women say in unison.

Detective Cain looks down at his folder, avoiding the need to look at either of the upset women.  "I'm afraid that the evidence all point to one disturbing scenario. Eric Brueller kidnapped Joseph Rhodes from his work after hours.  He then took him to a heDyvia Institute, where he had the thus-far machinery which was not yet connected to the internal network, wiped his mind and re-imprint him with is dead wife's memories, with a few personality tweeks."

Eileen shook her head.  "No Eric would never do such a thing.  Ever."

Mrs. Rhodes said nothing, she just stared at Eileen in an odd emotion: disbelief? maybe even part of her was just looking for some part of her husband in this woman.

Detective Greenburg stepped forward taking the folder from Detective Able.  "Are you so sure Mrs. Brueller? Didn't you love your career before your cancer, as a matter of fact didn't you tell Eric, that he was should quit his job since you made more money?  When you were still dating, didn't you make it clear that you would never give him oral sex? How often did you two actually have sex after your first born? Once a month, just a coincidence that you got pregnant again...  And when did all your opinions change? When you got home from the hospital. Eric obviously loved his wife, but he obviously wanted perfection from greatness."

Eileen shook her head.  "No, it's not that, it's just after being so close to death... things changed, it was trauma od facing my own mortality...  I just realized their was so much more to life..." Though she said the words she had believed for months, the tears running down her face revealed to everyone in the room, that she didn't even know if she believed a single word of her own.

Of course Eileen could see in the eyes of the three people that surrounded her, that they didn't believe her anymore than she believed herself.  More tears streaked down her cheeks. And she turned from them to leave the room. As she obviously wasn't a suspect, nor was she really in for questioning, the door was not locked and she pulled the door open and ran out into the hallway.  She stopped in front of the ladies room. she momentarily froze, unsure if she even belonged in there, but she entered anyway. She took a paper towel and tried to fix the smudges to her makeup. But every time her makeup looked better, the tears, and the overwhelming sense of anger and grief would over take her again.

After a little while the door opened again, and the woman from earlier, Mrs. Rhodes, was standing there.

She didn't say anything at first, her eyes were a little puffy, like she's been holding back tears.  "My name is Dani."

Eileen looked at her and blinked, she didn't realize until that point she hadn't learned this woman's name.  "I'm Eileen."

Of course they both knew that Dani already knew that.  But at least it was a bit more formal introduction. "So what do we do now?"

"Honestly, I'm not sure, I want to see this evidence, I don't know if I really believe it, but just what they said is making me question my whole life.  If the evidence is as positive as they say, I need to talk to my husband... he's not even my husband if it's true, it's a lie, you would be my wife, and beyond your name, I don't even know you.  I'm not even attracted to women."

Dani nods her head.  "And if it is true what about us?  Are you going to try and become yourself again?"

"I don't even know if that's possible, well physically, but I won't even consider such a thing unless they can return my true memories.  But it's not so simple, I have a family..."

Dani  took her left hand and held Eileen's right supportively.  "Are you ready to go back and see exactly that kind of 'damning' evidence they have on...  your husband?" The pause around her last two words seemed to fit an eternity.

"As ready as I'll ever be.  I'm not so sure I'm ready to find out for sure I was born a man."

Dani nodded.  "I'm not so sure I'm ready to find out my husband has been living for months as a woman...  a wife to another man, and a mother to his children."

That was a dreaded thought in it'self.  She suddenly felt empathy towards Dani, her own mind imagining Eric disappearing without a trace.  Only to be found months later living a life as a woman completely unaware of who Eileen was... happily raising the children of the man who had 'broken' her mind...  his mind?

They entered back into the interrogation room.  As they sat down, one of the detectives put a disc into the player, and handed the remote to Eileen.  Detective Cain simple said. "This footage was found off an old security server we found after we acquitted...  other suspects and reopened the case. We'll let you two watch this privately." With that

the two detectives left.

And the video showed the two women everything that they had feared was true.  videos of physical alterations to Joseph, the voice confirmations of Eric as he narrated how hopeless life would be without his truest love.  How he couldn't tell Sammi or Dennis that their mother had passed away. In someways it seemed in a disturbing way, romantic... but it was just sick.  Then the weeks of mind alteration condensed down to a ten minute section of the video. Week one, Eileen was going to come home

like nothing had changed.  But by week ten, eric had changed, admittedly made a few changes to her personality, that he thought would make her happier, and make sure that any diseases and cancers that often form as a physical manifestation of mental pressures would be less likely. Obviously this wasn't raw footage, it had been edited to be evidence in his arraignment.

Eileen shook her head, if thats what he had to tell himself to make sure she loved sucking cock, right?  The sarcasm then swamped her brain. A sarcasm that was not normally characteristic of her... at least not in recent months.

The video ended.  Eileen looked at Dani.  "I'm sorry. You seem so nice, and I'm sorry my hus-  Eric, took the person I was away from you. I'm sorry you had to go through all the pain and anguish of not knowing if he- I was still alive."  She stood up. "I'm not sure what Joseph would do here." She leaned over and gave Dani a small kiss on the cheek. "But I need to see him."

With that she left the room, hearing a small sob as the door closed behind her.  The detectives were there. "Bring me to see Eric."

Detective Greenburg lead the way, leaving Detective Cain to talk more with Dani.  She was lead to a room. She sat down, another interrogation room. She waited there for a few minutes, until she heard a door open, he was already wearing an orange jump suit.  His hands and feet were both shackled. She sat down without a word, and simply stared at him.

He smiled at Eileen.  "Hunny. I'm so glad to see you, they wouldn't even tell me what i was being arrested for.  I didn't do anything, the only time they don't tell you what your crime is, is if it's serious, and the victim hasn't been informed yet...  Given who I work for, probably embezzlement, but I swear, it wasn't me. You have to believe me. Did you call our lawyer?"

"I know you didn't, they told me."

"They arrested me at work, the only thing I can figure, is that someone must have framed me for espionage or embezzlement, and I swear hunny, I never did any of that stuff." then he stopped and looked at her, "They told you?"  New laws passed in recent decades say police can arrest a person if evidence of a crime is found, but can only hold a person for 24 hours until the inform the victim, and then can officially charge them

with the crime.

She nodded her head slowly.  "I know you didn'tembezzle money..."  Well she didn't, but that not what he was arrested for.  You just kidnapped some guy, fucked with his mind and body to make him believe he was your DEAD WIFE!"  she jumped to her feet and smashed down on the table between them with both of her hands as she screamed the last two words.

He looked shocked.  Was the look of terror on his face, because he didn't have time to plan a response for that to her?  Or because he had finally been caught?

Finally.  "That's not true, don't believe them."

"I never liked oral sex before I came home from the hospital."

He shook his head.  "I know hun, but things just changed, probably because of the tr-"

"-Trauma?" she cut him off.  "The trauma of facing my own mortality.  The foolishness I've believed for months."

Eric stood up.  "Look it simply isn't true, I'm your husband, you should know me well enough to know I would never do anything to hurt you.  They obviously did a good job of convincing you. But whatever they say, believe me, not them."

There was a part of Eileen that wanted to be the dutiful housewife, and do as he said, but she also knew that was part of the changes he had made to his wife's mind.  "No."

"Whatever they say is just hearsay, we both know it's not true."

He was lying and she knew it.  She looked up at him with renewed anger. She stepped to him with a fire burning in her eyes as she shoved him hard back into his seat.  "I saw the video asshole!" She shoved his shoulders again, forcing him and his seat to go backwards.

"What video?"

"The compilation of all your little private lab notes from when you worked at the Dyvia center!"

Eric's mouth hung open unsure what to say.  It started with a stutter, Eileen almost wondered if he was going to say there were no cameras…  "It... it... must be a fake..." He let out a sigh. "Look, it was prob-"

She cut him off, as a couple of tears rolled down her eyes, her arms trembling as he tried to cover them up not wanting him to see her like this.  "Don't bother." She took off her wedding rings and threw them at him. "You think it's okay for an unwilling man to be made someone's wife? ...Maybe you can be someone's wife in prison."  she turned and walked toward the door. "But... I'll call Paul-" his lawyer "-for you."

She knocked on the door.  A guard entered to escort her out, the last thing she heard from Eric was.  "Eileen, I love you! Please you have to believe me..." And the door closed cutting off anything else he had to say.

Eileen and Detective Greenburg met up with Detective Cain and Dani. Detective Cain looked at the two of them, handing each of them a card, if there's anything else I can help either of you with, I'll be happy to my best."

Eileen took her card, and said.  "Thank you, but for now I think I'll be all set.  He nodded his head, and almost the same ritual was displayed between him and Dani.

As the two women exited the police station Eileen looked at Dani.  "Do you think we can talk for a little bit?"

She nodded her head.

"I just need one moment."  She picked up her phone, and dialed Jenny.  "hi Jenny, it's me, yeah it's serious I'll fill you in later, do you think you'll be okay for another hour or two?  ...great, you're the best, tell the kids i love'em."

Dani looked kinda sad at the brief call.

"I can imagine how frustrated you are.  Knowing i've been a mother to my kidnappers children..."  A thought occurred to her. "Do we? ...have children?"

Dani shook her head.  "No, you never wanted any.  Besides... we both tend to get caught up in our careers..."

Eileen looked down.  "I'm so sorry, I can't imagine not wanting children. I've always...  Well I thought I always wanted children. And to be honest I'm not even sure what to do now because of them.  If I try to go back to being your husband, what happens to my kids? Do they live with their grandparents? Do they go to foster homes?"  There was no answer, to Eileen's knowledge and probably Dani's this was the first time a

situation like this had come up...  "So what do you do for a career?"

Dani looked at Eileen with a widening smile.  "I'm a computer programmer. and a damn good one."

Eileen smiled back.  "How do you think you'd do with the computers that messed with my head, fix me?"  She was half-joking, half-hopeful... but one look on Dani's face and she knew she spoke out of turn, a mix of guilt and sadness.  "It's okay, I didn't actually think you would know how to fix it... I was just kidding."

"I know."  A few tears started rolling down Dani's face.  "I just miss my husband...."

"I do too... even though apparently he's not..."  She let out a sigh. "So... Dani Rhodes? is that my last name your your maiden name?"

"Well the detective did say 'Joseph Rhodes'"  She playfully winked. "My maiden name was 'Anderson' if that jogs anything."

Eileen cracked a smile and shrugged.  "It doesn't." She hugged the odd woman.  "Well I'll make an appointment at the Dyvia Institute tomorrow, and at least see what if any options are available."

Dani smiled.  "That's something..."

"I guess, but I am who I am, and I am not willing to give up 'me,' but I still want to know who I was..."  Eileen let out a sigh. "Either way, what do I tell my kids?"

Dani put her hand on Eileen's shoulder as they separated from their hug. "Well I don't know how old they are, but tell them the truth, at least the important stuff, their father is in jail, they are still sorting out evidence,  and not to worry because no matter what happens, everything will work out and they are loved by both of their parents."

Eileen laughed.  "I can see why your husband loves you so much, your caring, loving, concerned with others... and quite frankly that was such a 'guy' answer."

"A guy answer?" she asked.

And Eileen nodded.  "Yeah, person vents, women will comfort and reassure, men offer solutions and answers."

Dani laughed.  "wow, I did just give a guy answer...  I just don't know you enough to say your strong or will come up with an answer...  I just know your world has been turned upside down, you beat cancer a few years ago, have kids, and... uhh.. like to give your husband blow jobs."

"That's not awkward, your wife who you don't remember from the days when you were a man- again that I don't remember- is talking to you about how much you like to give blow jobs to your current husband..."

"I didn't say how much, just that you do like to..."

Eileen looked at Dani unsure of how to ask.  "Did you give the old me blow jobs?"

Dani smiled and nodded her head.  "Yeah, you were pretty thick-headed when it came to me giving subtle hints that i was horny, blow jobs were an easy start."

"Men so often are..."  The conversation was visibly disturbing Eileen more so than Dani.  "Look, I have to go... I know I said I'd spend time, but can we do that tomorrow?  I'd need to talk to my mother.... and the in-laws..." She pulled out her cell if we trade numbers, "feel free to call me..."

Dani tapped her phone to Eileen's transferring contact info.  "Sure Eileen." She leaned in and kissed Eileen on the cheek. "I know you're not my husband right now, but regardless I am very happy to see that you are alive... and even happier to know my husband didn't just walk out on me..."

They gave each other a hug, and walked in separate directions.

Eileen sat in her car and called her mother.  "Hi Mom... it's me… please just listen for a moment..  we need to talk, Eric was arrested… I'm gonna pick up Eric's sister, and try and have Eric's parents meet at your place, I don't think I can say what happened more than once..."  Her mother, though not her mother, not that she knew that yet... calmly

comforted her, and agreed.

And as to be expected, that was surreal for everyone.  How do you tell your family, your parents, your husband's sister and his parents, that you are not that special person in their life?  That your husband kidnapped you, genetically reprogrammed you, brainwashed you, and made you think you were someone else... their someone else who died... when neither you nor them knew, just your husband?

Surreal?  Yes... that was the word for Eileen's early evening.  Her parents... well 'Eileen's' were dumbfounded, they didn't know how to react, there were tears for their daughter, but how could they truly comprehend their daughter was gone, when she was standing right in front of them with all the right memories, of cooking cookies and brownies with Mom when she was in second grade for a bake sale... or as a toddler

having her dad teach her how to ride a bike on training wheels?  Prom night... grounding her for sneaking out at night... Graduating college... announcing her proposal, the wedding, getting pregnant, every one at the hospital when she had her first child..  Her second... telling them each about cancer, telling them everything would be fine when she knew it wasn't, then telling them all she was better... Shared memories, and only the moost recent ones was actuall hers.

One the other hand, Eric's parents seemed to take a significant amount of guilt towards both Eileen and her parents.  Eric's sister, Andrea hugged Eileen and said she didn't care, as far as she was concerned, they would always be sisters or brothers, she didn't care, they had never been so close as they ha been in the past few years...  Eileen cried... But the night ended, and she went home after dropping off Andrea.

She went home, she told Jenny her best friend.  Jenny just stared at her, hey had known each other for about two years before she got cancer… well the real Eileen had cancer...  Jenny knew the faux-Eileen longer than the real one. Yet Jenny just had to keep looking her up and down, looking for some sign that she wasn't her friend and found none.  Jenny was dumbfounded, and like with her friend, some tears were shed.

Promises to remain friends lingered, but even Eileen didn't know how genuine they were, and there was still the lingering weight of having to tell the kids...

When Jenny went home, Eileen sat down with the kids...  She didn't even know where to begin, she couldn't tell them that she wasn't there mother...  Hell, she didn't even believe that deep down, she still remembered 16 hours of labor with Sammi and still had the scars from her c-section with Dennis... but she told them that their father got caught doing something he shouldn't have, and was going to be away fro a while,

but promised they bother her and their father still loved them.  The three slept together that night allowing eileen to comfort her children, yet she resented the fact that she had to restrain her own anger... her sense of betrayal, of loss, and confusion.

She toyed with not sending the kids to school, but ultimately sent them anyway, keep some normalcy to their day.

There was a knock at the door, she opened it, she was caught off guard, it was Dani and an older couple...  "Hi...Eileen... I'm sorry for intruding, but I told your parents, and they wanted to meet you."

Eileen looked at the couple; they didn't even look vaguely familiar to her.  "Hi... I'm sorry I don't recognize you... but you can come in, can I make you coffee or tea?"

The older woman introduced herself.  "I'm Arlene, you used to call me Mom," her voice broke at that last word and then embraced Eileen tightly,"I don't care what that monster did to you, I still love you..." she sniffed.

Eileen felt awkward.  "I'm sorry Ma'am... Arlene..."  She pulled away. "Look that 'monster' is my husband...  I think... I remember being married to him for over ten years, memories fake or not, I don’t know you, but I still love my husband no matter how angry I am at him...  At least I think, I just don't know..." She paused seeing the shock in Arlene's eyes. "But I'm never opposed to expanding my friends and family." She forced a smile..

The man reached forward with his hand, Eileen extended it as the man said, "Tom."  He looked at their handshake, like he expected something more firm, and not dainty nor feminine.  "Not sure if I believe this at all, but if it's true and my son is somewhere deep inside you, then I know two things, I got your back, and more importantly, you're a good person, my son was the best."

Dani stood over.  "Sorry if this was really awkward, but I couldn't keep that their son was alive, even if you're not a 'son' anymore, even if you don't remember them anymore..."

Eileen nodded her head.  "If it was Dennis, I'd want to know as well." She put her hand on Dani's shoulder reassuringly.  "Anyway, about that coffee or tea?"

And they shared an hour of each other's time as they learned about one another.  Not in too much detail, but a simple conversation as though Eileen had just met a new group of friends, and they were polite enough not to discuss her previous life too much, just nice people.

They left and she took a shower, it was a strange shower.  She looked at her body in a new light, her breasts, her vagina...  Things that were less than five years old, yet she remembered having them for over three decades.  Normal things she had been doing for most of her life, like shaving her legs, shampooing her hair, she might not have known how to do any of that just a few years ago.  Even Eric seemed dumbfounded from time to time when she used 'a ridiculous amount of shampoo... Even when she

was drying off, she automatically put her hair into a towel over her head until she was ready to blow dry it, and she wrapped the towel around her, in such a way she covered her breasts...  As a man she probably brushed 'his' hair out, and the towel went around his waist... if he even bothered... Doing her makeup was pretty straight forward, but again just a few years ago, she probably had no idea, but she remembers wearing too

much makeup in highschool, and it took years before she figured out the right amount for her... and it really wasn't her.  It was Eric's real wife, and she was a clone, built from an unwilling man who probably fought tooth and nail to hold on to those memories of that woman, Dani...

When she left, she made it a point to write on her list of things to do, to make an appointment with a psychiatrist or counselor or something...  She would definitely need professional help to get through this 'weirdness.'

She called that Dyvia institute, and explained to the receptionist what happened..  their was an odd pause, a long hold and finally someone picked up saying they were expecting a call to a direct line, apparently when she was going to see the police again, they had contact information for her so she could make an appointment.  She made an appointment for Monday morning. She politely thanked them, and hung up.

She went back to the police station.

She waited for nearly an hour before she was allowed to see her husband, as she walked in she couldn't help but notice how tired he looked.  Worse than she did... his fingers still partially stained from the finger-printing.

As she walked in he looked up at her solemnly, his eyes started to glow, and then again seemed almost to dim as she stepped closer.  "Did Paul call you?"

Eric nodded his head.  "Yeah..." He paused. "The phrase 'insurmountable mountain of evidence' was brought up.

Eileen.  "You do realize what you did was wrong, don't you?  I would not have wanted someone else to lose their life for mine."

Eric gasped.  "I forgot... I can't believe, I forgot..."

Eileen looked at him.  "Forgot? that you pretty much killed someone to make me live?"

"I forgot.  Everything was so intense, couldn't tell the kids you were dead, I saved you...and I forgot that the real Eileen died."

Eileen rolled her eyes.  "So you just repressed it all?"

Eric nodded his head.  "Yeah, I think so."

"You 'think so?'"  She shook her head.  "So I guess that's the defense plea?  you were crazy? in such denial and mourning you did whatever you did in a fugue state?"

Eric shook his head.  "No, I really did..."

"Eric, take the responsibility.  You killed Joseph Rhodes, yes, this body is alive, but you killed him, everything that was him, is gone. personaity, memories, everything that was him, and now I am stuck with the guilt of stealing all of that from him, when you were the mother-fucker who did it."

"Eileen!"

"Fuck you!"

"That's enough Eileen," a voice said from behind her.

She turned around and saw Paul.  "Hello Paul."

"Hello Eileen, I'm sorry, but given the nature of your relationship now... and I mean alleged victim and alleged victimizer, not husband and wife... you should leave here, and not come back until after the trial.

She felt a tear roll down her eyes, she wasn't sure if it was because she hadn't had the chance to finish venting, and telling him what he had done... even if he knew... or if it was because he defined for them, that they weren't together anymore... a mere impossible fiction 24 hours earlier...

She grabbed her purse, and left without another word.

She left the police station a bit of an emotional wreck.  She sat in her car for a while quietly sobbing to herself, and then she opened up her phone, she looked a the contact info for Dani.  It had an address for a corporate systems servicing company.

She drove in there and walked up to a receptionist and asked for Dani… She was in.  A few minutes later Dani came into the lobby and they gave a brief hug. Dani asked, "I'm going to the Dyvia institute on Monday, I was hoping you would come.  I mean, I don't know what will happen, but I can't ask my family to come... well Eileen's." She didn't think she would ever reconcile that she wasn't Eileen. "And you seem nice, and if

I do get your husband's memories back...  I'm sure you'll be the first thing I'd want to see."

Dani nodded her head.  "Yeah absolutely!" She hugged Eileen again.

Eileen offered.  "I know it's strange, but a few of us are going to the casino for a girl's night on saturday, you are welcome to come, meet some of my friends... hopefully friends I will still have when this is all behind me.  We talked last night and decided not to cancel our fun, and they all agreed I needed to let loose."

Dani laughed, and then got oddly silent.  "Thank you, but no. I have a gambling addiction, embarrassingly I lost most of your life insurance money to gambling debts about a year after you disappeared..."  A tear rolled down her face. "...it took so long for us to even realize what happened to you because the police at first thought I did something… then they learned about my gambling addiction and thought the people I

owed money to had killed you so I would get the insurance money to pay them off... it wasn't until that was all closed that the authorities finally started tracking down the truth..."

The ammount of guilt on her face was was overwhleming.  Her husband gone for five years becasue of her mistake? Sure he would have been kidnapped anyway, but she felt guilt for him not being found sooner.  Time for Eileen to hug Dani. "Well you found me. I might not remember our life, but worst case scenario, you have a new friend."

Dani wiped away her tears.  "Thanks."

Preview paragraph to part 3

Monday:

Dr. Crampton was looking at Eileen as she lay unconscious with the equipment strapped to her head.  As the process began, the doctor's professional gaze slackened, the information was going back and forth… wait back and forth?  Whoever fucked with her head, her brain acting like a computer virus corrupting the machinery, if the doctor tried to stop it, it could kill Eileen, and it could wipe all the software on the

system, if he did nothing, he didn't know what would happen.  It's possible she would have no memories of anything, ever...?

...to be continued...

Apologies for how long it took for part 2 to come.  Since releasing part 1, this part went from ready to publish through 2 major re-writes.  I am mostly satisfied with it now, but now thing part 3 is no longer where iI wanted that.  I had told everyone to wait for a major announcement, but thats on hiatus until part 3 is out...

For now, feedback is encouraged: mistress_dyvia@yahoo.com also, make a comment/review on fictionmania, they are the fuel for my urge to write.
